Safety checks before you install

Protect your funds by verifying authenticity at every step.

1) Confirm the source

Only download Ledger Live from the official ledger.com domain or official app stores. Avoid ads, mirrors, or look-alike sites.

2) Verify checksum & signature

After downloading, compute the SHA256 checksum and compare it to the value published on the official site. For added assurance, verify the PGP/Developer signature where provided.

3) Keep your recovery phrase offline

Never type your 24-word recovery phrase into a website or app. Store it offline in a safe place (consider a metal backup for durability).

4) Test with a small transaction

Send a small test amount first to confirm the signing workflow and address display on your device before moving larger sums.

Setup: from download to first transaction

  1. Install & open Ledger Live. Run the installer and grant requested permissions. On macOS, you may need to allow the app in Security & Privacy.
  2. Connect your Ledger device. Use the official USB cable (or Bluetooth on supported devices). Unlock the device and follow on-screen prompts.
  3. Verify firmware and manager. If prompted, update firmware only via Ledger Live and verify any authenticity messages on the device.
  4. Install coin apps & add accounts. Use Manager to install blockchain apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.), then add accounts to Ledger Live to sync balances.
  5. Secure preferences. Set a password lock for the app, review analytics preferences, and ensure your recovery phrase is backed up offline.

Tip: if your device isn't detected, try a different cable/port, close other wallet apps, or reboot.
